Sixteen

Despite getting home in the wee hours of the morning, Neagley was up early. She made herself a cup of coffee and then scrambled eggs. There was a lot to do and she knew this thing would be coming to a head soon.

It had to, she was beginning to lose patience.

Her phone buzzed and she saw it was a Milwaukee number.

“Neagley,” she said.

“Hey, it’s Tom. Tom Sanderson.”

Neagley waited.

“Uh, I just called because I remembered something. It’s probably not important, which is why I probably forgot to mention it.”

“What’s that?” Neagley asked, as she ate the last forkful of scrambled eggs.

“You had asked me if Mary and I were L & T Enterprises, right?”

“Yeah.”

“I said, we weren’t, which is true. But I also remembered that Mary told me about a weird code she had discovered that was associated with that company. It was kind of an offhand comment, which is probably why I didn’t remember it.”

Neagley said nothing and waited.

“Like I said, it’s weird. But she said something like High School Global and then a long string of numbers. Like, maybe the phones we were delivering were for some third-world school somewhere. I don’t know what the hell it meant, but there you have it.”

“Did she say where she saw this code?”

“No, I guess I didn’t think to ask. I assumed it was nonsense, but you’re right, maybe with a little more context…”

“Send it to me,” Neagley said.

“Send what to you?”

Neagley bit her lip, patience was not her virtue and this guy was testing her limits.

“The code, Tom. Send me the code.”

“Oh yeah, okay. Hold on.”

She heard him shuffling some papers and then there was a click on the phone. After a few moments, Neagley wondered if he’d hung up on her. She also wondered why Tom wasn’t mentioning Mary’s body being found in Lake Mendota. Maybe they hadn’t identified her yet?

But then her phone dinged with a text message. She glanced down, saw the code Tom had been talking about.

“Is that it?” she asked. “You don’t remember anything else?”

“That’s all I can think of at the moment.”

Neagley hung up without thanking Tom.

What an odd phone call, she thought. She scraped her plate and put it into the dishwasher along with the fork then sat back down and sipped from her black coffee.

The code meant nothing to her, and she didn’t recall it being included in any of the paperwork Dixon had provided.

Which meant either she’d missed those details in the paperwork, Mary had been wrong, or Tom was lying.

She also wondered if there was a different reason for Tom’s call. She checked the clock. Not even seven o’clock in the morning. Tom hadn’t struck her as an early morning go-getter.

Neagley set her coffee cup in the dishwasher, slid her 9mm and its holster into her waistband, grabbed the keys and went into the garage. She fired up the BMW, raised the garage door and pulled out into the driveway. From there, she opened the gate via remote control and turned left.
